About the ITLS South Africa

ITLS is a global organisation dedicated to preventing death and disability from trauma through education and emergency trauma care.

The South African Chapter of ITLS was established officially in 2004 and fulfils the mission of the organisation through the work done by its training centres and instructor network.

As a registered Non Profit Company ITLS SA is run by a dedicated team of volunteer EXCO members and Medical Directors elected bi-annually at an AGM.

At present, ITLS SA offers the following internationally and locally (CPD) accredited courses:

  • ITLS Basic and Advanced provider
  • ITLS Paediatric provider
  • ITLS Access (From July 2013)
  • ITLS Instructor.

The Chapter is in the process of importing the ITLS Access course which aims to teach first responders the principles of gaining access to trauma patients using simple techniques and common hand-tools. This course will be piloted in June 2013 and will be available shortly afterward.

South Africa is represented at the International Trauma conference held each year in the US and has voting rights that allow us to participate in the election of the organisation’s leaders. Dr. Elsabe Nel (immediate past Medical Director of ITLS SA) has just been elected to the International Board of Directors for a second term.
